LOST IN THE EDGE OF LIGHT

He is on top of majestic mountains, fog surrounds him, dawn approaches and he is bathed in the sun’s warmth, then it’s gone… The artist is lost and blinded by the light that suddenly eludes him. The glow and radiance of that light is dimming and he seeks to capture it before it disappears.

SILENT MAN (SELF PORTRAIT)

It is interesting that this is not his usual known style. Bordering on expressionism, his self portrait took Von longer than usual. Quiet and reserved, most people associate him. And he took that image, that persona as part acceptance and acknowledgement to his enigmatic self. Von’s features, as if they are lighted by a glimmer of light hitting fractions of his visage, are countered by the artist’s signature application of textures.

WAKING BEFORE DAWN

Von’s use of red induces the first hot sting of rising sun, burst of warmth when it touches your skin. He denotes this feverish streak does not truly relate to love and passion as most will associate this color with, but the ascending golden orb’s splash of hues that rules in the day.

AFTERMATH

A huge outburst, a sonic boom when the world we live in ends without warning. End of living. Mother Nature will desert us in the end because of our neglect and abuse. Von implicates this with fierce colors that somehow leave a somber tone, as if this mass of land was painfully neglected.

THE ULTIMATE TRUTH

Japanese characters in the backdrop, Von employs the use of his signature technique. Tints integrating form dark to light. He sees it as balance, a neutral meeting ground wherein colors convene and form an entity nevertheless it still is a component that unifies his sentiments. Beyond his inspiration from his lifestyle and passion, beyond violence and beauty of martial arts, zen philosophy and beliefs, only a solitary reality is universal: you find your true self in times of turmoil, which is the ultimate truth.

LOST IN LOVE

The abandonment and carefree mood of being in love. It is not love itself that he tries to project, but the notion, emotion or sensation it stirs when you are in that delicious, glorious state. Just as Von puts it, “Floating and pleasant, just like what it feels to be lost in love.”

VON NG: SERENE TRANSCENDENCE

Von Ng is a visionary vanguard. For 15 years, he dabbled to different methods but abstract art spoke to him. He went to solitary journey and found himself asking what his mission, his true calling is. A reenergized spirit he came back with a decision. Von never thought that he will pursue art as his way of life so to speak.

A mix of abstract art with Chinese calligraphy; a homage to his ancestral roots. He’s enthused with the simple artistry of calligraphy with mere brush strokes; gets to integrate two unlikely worlds together to form a harmony that is perfect and natural. Von’s inspiration comes from anywhere; he’s drawn to colors and forms. He finds great beauty with oriental artifacts, aged and faded yet still magnificent and unique. As an artist he knows that he must evolve and continuously look for inspirations, unlikely they may seem.

He is now into galaxy, with its explosion of hues, and the interesting contours of space ships and geometric shapes. Abstract art and its aesthetics struck an inner chord; an artist comes alive when he knows that this is what meant to do. He is not afraid to stand by his convictions. True to an artist’s heart, Von knew from the start that his journey is not going to be easy, probably never will be. But he stuck to his ideals, defied his father, and is happy. Some may say he’s crazy, knowing the world he’s going to live in is pitiless and hunger will stay at his doorstep but he is what he is. One cannot live without breathing. And breathing for Von Ng is arts.

A single artwork takes painstaking months to complete. He starts out with a theme, but instinct takes over and he goes to the innate flow of things, wherever that may lead him. He’s introspective take on life reflects in his paintings. Darker, bolder, more daring. Black and purple are now dominant tones in his present artworks.

He remains optimistic; he must be in this world. His perceptive instincts led him to this, a journey where there is no straight line, a path that must be taken.
